High Court of Gujarat Recruitment 2017 for 129 Civil Judges
The High Court of Gujarat has announced a recruitment drive for 129 Civil Judge positions, including 97 regular posts and 32 ad-hoc posts.

Eligibility Criteria
Candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Educational qualification: A Law degree from a recognized university in India, with practice as an Advocate in Civil and/or Criminal Courts on the application deadline date. Candidates who passed their Law degree from 2009-2010 onwards must have cleared the All India Bar Examination. Alternatively, candidates must be working in Courts or other Allied Departments on the application deadline date.
- Computer knowledge: Certificate(s) certifying Basic Knowledge of Computer Application/Operation from a Government Institute or other recognized Institute, as specified in Government of Gujarat resolutions PRCH-102005-1532-K (dated 30/09/2006) and CRR-10-2007-120320-G.5 (dated 13/08/2008).
- Age limit: 35 years

Application fees vary by category:
- Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Socially & Educationally Backward Classes, Physically Disabled Persons, and Ex-servicemen: Rs.400/- (plus Bank Charges)
- All other candidates: Rs.800/- (plus Bank Charges)
Payment must be made to Current Bank Account No. 30725811785 with State Bank of India, High Court Complex Branch, Ahmedabad, in the name of Registrar General, High Court of Gujarat, Sola, Ahmedabad. Payment can be made through any SBI Core Banking Service Branch using the ‘Cash Voucher’ in the special format provided with the advertisement, from 23/05/2017 to 22/06/2017 during bank working days and hours.
Selection Process
Final selection will be based on three stages:
- Elimination Test (Preliminary Examination)
- Main Written Examination (Descriptive Type)
- Viva-voce (Oral Interview) Test
Preliminary Examination (Elimination Test)
The Preliminary Examination consists of 100 marks to be completed in 2 hours, featuring Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) worth 1 mark each with negative marking of 0.33 marks for each wrong answer.
Syllabus for Preliminary Examination:
- Part – A: The Indian Penal Code, 1860; The Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973; The Indian Evidence Act, 1872; The Gujarat Prohibition Act, 1949; The Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881 (Only Chapter XVII)
- Part – B: The Code of Civil Procedure, 1908; The Limitation Act, 1963; The Indian Contract Act, 1872; The Constitution of India – [Part-III – Fundamental Rights (Articles 12 to 35A) & Part-IVA – Fundamental Duties]
- Part – C: General Knowledge, English Language, Test of Reasoning, Numerical & Mental Ability and Basics of Computer Applications
The language distribution is 75 questions in English and 25 questions in Gujarati. The Preliminary Examination Paper (Objective Type) will be evaluated by computer based on OMR Sheet entries. Since evaluation is done by scanning, there is no human intervention, and queries regarding rechecking of OMR Sheets after the Preliminary Examination will not be entertained.
Candidates securing a minimum of 50% marks in the Preliminary Examination will be eligible for the Main Written Examination. However, marks obtained in the Preliminary Examination will not be considered for preparing the Final Merit List.
Main Written Examination (Descriptive Type)
The Main Written Examination consists of three papers based on the following syllabus:
- Paper-I: Criminal Law
- Paper-II: Civil Law
- Paper-III: Gujarati Language
Viva-voce (Oral Interview) Test
The Viva-voce Test carries 50 marks and aims to assess the candidate’s suitability for the cadre by evaluating mental alertness, knowledge of law, clear and logical exposition, balance of judgment, skills, attitude, ethics, power of assimilation, power of communication, character, and intellectual depth.
