Important Changes in UPSC CSP, 2014 Regarding English Language

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) released a crucial notification for the Civil Services Preliminary Examination, 2014. This announcement brought important amendments to the exam structure that every candidate needed to know.

Background of Changes

These modifications came after the Government of India made decisions documented in Extra-Ordinary Gazette Notification No. 202, dated 16.08.2014. The changes amended the Rules of Civil Services Examination, 2014, which were initially notified on 31.5.2014.

Exam Schedule

The Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination, 2014 was scheduled for 24.08.2014 (Sunday). Candidates appearing for this exam needed to pay close attention to the following changes:

Key Amendments

  • Both Paper-I and Paper-II would be conducted for two hours each
  • Questions on English Language Comprehension skills (Class X level) in Paper-II would not be evaluated for merit
  • Candidates were advised not to attempt English questions without Hindi translations in their test booklets

Revised Exam Structure

The examination now consists of two compulsory papers:

  • Paper-I: 200 marks
  • Paper-II: 200 marks minus the maximum marks allocated to English Language Comprehension questions

Merit Calculation

Final merit for qualifying candidates for the Civil Services (Main) Written Examination would be calculated using:

  • Aggregate marks from Paper-I (out of 200)
  • Marks from Paper-II (out of 200) minus the maximum marks for English questions
